Abstract
-
The Progeny 1 is a wooden carved panel by Chibuzo Chris Okpala, measuring 1.10ft x 3.5ft, created in 2025. Titled “Akika,” this work draws on a traditional Igbo motif widely used in “Mgbo” (wooden door panels), “Okwa” (wooden mortars), and “Ugbii” (wooden trays). Through this carving, Chibuzo establishes an inextricable tie between contemporary and traditional Igbo art, ensuring the continuity of Igbo visual forms. The “Akika” motif, often representing the Igbo four market days (Eke, Orie, Afo, Nkwo) on these objects, serves as a symbol of cultural heritage. This piece marks the first episode of Chibuzo’s efforts to illuminate and preserve the fading “Akika motif,” safeguarding its significance for future generations
