This artwork vividly depicts the historical origins of Mgba Afikpo, a traditional wrestling practice in the Afikpo-Igbo cultural areas. According to oral tradition, the origins of Mgba can be traced back to Nkpoghoro in Ehugbo. The story recounts how a man from Nkpoghoro went to his farm and heard exciting noises from a distance. Curious, he approached the scene and observed a large group of monkeys (Enwo) wrestling among themselves, organized by age variations. Fascinated by what he saw, the farmer returned home and recreated the wrestling matches, thus domesticating the practice and giving birth to Mgba. This art piece captures the essence of this cultural narrative, celebrating the rich heritage and traditions of the Afikpo people. Through vibrant acrylics on textured canvas, the artist brings to life the historical moment that led to the creation of Mgba, a significant cultural activity that continues to be cherished and practiced in the community.
